SCOTTSVILLE (KYTX) -Wanda Jackson is apart of the family that has been caring for this cemetery since the 60's. Jackson says this cemetery dates back to the 1850's and is a burial ground for former slaves She says her family reached out to the two colleges in Marshall. "Because of our age, we needed to help. But it is also a good learning experience."
Jackson says that in 2003 - the land around the cemetery was sold and her family was no longer able to access the land to care for the grounds. They regained access in 2011 and she says the historic site was filled with trees and weeds ETBU faculty member Dr. Lisa Seeley says that's where her students saw an opportunity.
"We just try to encourage our students to serve on a regular basis. So they will do it after they graduate."
