LONGVIEW (KYTX) - The East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in Longview has been treating alcohol and drug abuse for years, but is now stepping up to the plate to go even further. These 6 people have been training all week to become recovery coaches for ETCADA's new recovery center. Charle's Smith is one of them, and after battling addiction he now wants to help others.
"I understand where they are and where they want to go, or where they need to go" - Charles Smith,
ETCADA serves 23 counties in East Texas and can treat up to 40 people each day.
Recovery Center Manager Sandy Raulston says the center opened in may and has been holding support groups, but this week is the first time coaches are being trained. These aspiring coaches are learning how to talk to someone in recovery, how to solve personal problems, and how to keep relationships professional.
"When you haven't been sober for so long, you don't know what to do with yourself. How to get an apartment, a job, They're just not assimilated with free society." - Sandy Raulston, Recovery Center Manager
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 60% of drug abusers relapse after treatment. The program will follow treatment patients at least 3 years after making sure this new program succeeds.
