Evidence against accused Tyler Murderer discussed in hearing

TYLER (KYTX) -- Capital murder defendant James Calvert had a pretrial hearing Friday in Smith County's 241st District Court.

Calvert is accused of killing his ex-wife, Jelena Sriraman, in October 2012 and then going on the run with their 4-year-old son before being captured in Louisianan.

The hearing began with confirmation from Assistant District Attorney April Sykes that digital evidence from Calvert's computer had been turned over to Calvert's defense team under an agreement made last week.

Separately, District Attorney Matt Bingham gave the court notice of new information regarding some blood samples from the handgun Calvert allegedly used and the shirt and jeans he was wearing the day his ex-wife died. The lab assigned to test those samples believes the available blood evidence will be consumed by the testing process, leaving no option to re-test it later.

Defense Attorney Jeff Haas said he and his co-council, Jason Cassel, would take that information into consideration before deciding whether to simply agree to it or request an additional hearing.

Calvert's next court date is October 3, 2013.
