UNCERTAIN (KYTX) - Measures to stop the spread of Giant Salvinia in East Texas lakes started, today.
Texas Parks and Wildlife workers took to the waters to profile heavily infested areas, and mark them down for future sprayings. Biologist Tim Bister says this year has been much better than last year, but steps must be taken to prevent the plant from spreading. This week, TPW searched Caddo Lake.
"Last year, almost half of the acreage was covered in Giant Salvinia. The start of the year this year, it knocked back to where there was free travel to almost wherever you want to go." -Tim Bister
Bister says the plant can double in size in just one week. These preventive measures must be on going. Giant Salvinia can cause a mat of plant material across a lake and cause a number of problems. Kill fish, stop boats, and cover natural beauty.
