EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- We've heard a lot during the fit city challenge, that getting a partner can help make you both more successful.
The Harpers decided to be that motivator for one another.
There's less temptation with everyone eating clean and you always have an accountability partner by your side.
Mike and Lois Harper have been married for almost 32 years. For 27, Mike had to watch as his wife worked through debilitating pain.
"For years I have had rheumatoid arthritis and with that goes a lot of aches and pains, feeling terrible all of the time. We started with a new chiropractor and he suggested we try a different way of eating and we did."
You may recognize this voice of encouragement from radio station KVNE.
Mike made sure Lois didn't have to change her diet and start exercising alone.
"And she saw great gain from doing that and I lost some weight too and feel better."
Mike dropped 20 pounds Lois lost 10, but for them it wasn't about the weight but how much better they feel. The benefits come from walks together at Rose Heights Church.
They bought new bikes to get outside and they've cut out processed foods.
"Basically just a lot of fruits and vegetables and we use stevia as a sweetener."
And if they eat something like peanut butter it's all natural now and the incredible part for Lois, she can open a jar pain free.
"Hurt to walk. It hurt a lot to walk and I can do that now without any difficulty," Lois said.
"It's like having my wife back," Mike said. "She feels better, she's got more energy."
And they're looking forward to many more years together-- pain free.
And what's amazing is Lois is now off all of her rheumatoid arthritis medication and her RA is in remission.
