Fit City Success: Tyler Pastor loses 70 pounds

TYLER (KYTX) - A Tyler pastor is shocked into a lifestyle change. Bobby Bressman says his wake-up call came when his doctor diagnosed him as obese.  In our fit city success story how he turned his health around.

The doctor also gave Bobby Bressman, the pastor at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, more sobering news.  He needed to work on his blood pressure, stress management and stop living a sedentary lifestyle.

"I came home and googled it and the medical definition for obesity fit me, in fact, I was just barely under morbidly obese," says Pastor Bobby Bressman.  "I started thinking what do I need to do to lose weight?"

Pastor Bressman snapped a picture the day he vowed to cut back on the calories and to start tracking his movement.  He weighed 262 pounds and was taking in about 3,700 calories a day.

Pastor Bressman signed up for a free app-- lose  It calculated how many calories to eat to lose about 2 pounds a week.

"I didn't want to lose weight to lose weight, which is a good reason.  I didn't just want to lose weight just to see my kids have kids, which is one thing the doctor said I probably wouldn't have been able to do if I continued the way I was going.  The real reason I wanted to lose weight was to be a good steward honestly, for people to be able to say, if he can do it, I can do it too," says Pastor Bobby Bressman.

He also started wearing a Fitbit, which counts steps and calories burned.  He's now at 193 pounds, just 4 pounds away from his goal.  Pastor Bressman is enjoying better health now, his blood pressure is normal, he's sleeping without snoring and he's enjoying his new active lifestyle.  So much so, he and his wife are planning to train for a 5K.

Pastor Bressman says some of the people in his congregation saw his success and started following a similar plan.
