Former Chapel Hill athlete killed in Tyler mall shooting

TYLER (KYTX) - Former Chapel Hill standout dual-sport athlete Chris Mass died from his injuries sustained in an early morning shooting at Broadway Square Mall in Tyler.

Around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Tyler PD responded to a 911 call of a shooting at the mall in the 4600 block of S. Broadway.

Officers discovered the body of 23-year-old Mass lying in the Northeast corner of the parking lot of the mall.

Preliminary investigation determined that Mass had been struck by two rounds and died of his injuries at the scene.

The alleged shooter, 25-year-old Ricky Neal Jr. of Henderson, was arrested at the scene and since been charged with 1st degree murder.

After leading Chapel Hill High School to 3A state basketball tournament in 2007, Mass eventually was ranked No. 19 recruit in East Texas. He went on to Stephen F. Austin to play football and in his spare time volunteered as a basketball coach for Little Dribblers. Mass is described by former coaches as having a "heart of gold and always smiling."

Mass leaves behind his mother Latrese Mass and two young children.
