Former city councilman Martin Heines wins mayoral race

TYLER (KYTX) - After 10 years Tyler has a new mayor. Preliminary results show Martin Heines will be taking over for Barbara Bass who could not run because of term limits. The results show it was a landslide victory for Heines, taking 92 percent of the vote over Joel Rando.

For the past four years Heines has served on the city council along-side mayor Bass.

A battle to be named the new mayor of Tyler was between two men. The winner turned out to be the one with the most experience.

"A mayor doesn't do this by themselves they do it with the community," said Heines.

Heines used his years learning the ins and outs of local government and listening to the public to win the May smith county election.

"I think it's critical to have someone come from city council to be the mayor, it takes that experience," he said.

A sign of just how much support he's had throughout the campaign was shown as dozens showed up to congratulate him on his win.

Joel Rando was the contender in the mayoral race. As of now he has no plans to run again in the future.

Throughout his campaign Rando's message centered around bringing government back to the people. Of the two candidates, Rando has no political experience, but was hoping to use being a regular citizen to his advantage.

"We need people to stand up, weather i win or not, i want  people to be inspired by me," he said.

Although he's be beaten, Rando  has advice for the newly elected mayor.

"I hope he opens his ears and listens to the average person not just the people around him in city council."

Heines will be sworn in May 21st.
