Former Rains Co. Deputy to be arraigned on animal cruelty charge

EMORY (KYTX) – A former Rains County deputy who is accused of shooting a family dog while answering a burglary call is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on a felony animal cruelty charge.

Jerrod Dooley is on the criminal docket call for 9 a.m.

Dooley was responding to a burglary at the Middleton residence on FM 514 in the Daughtery Community on April 18, 2014.

A necropsy report shows the dog, Candy, was shot in the back of the head while she was retreating.

Dooley stated he felt in danger of being attacked by the family dog and reacted by shooting the dog to keep from being bitten.
