GCSO: Several inmates taken to Longview hospital Friday after synthetic marijuana smuggled into jail

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Gregg County Sheriff's Lt. Kirk Haddix says an investigation has been launched at the Gregg County Jail, where five inmates were treated after smoking synthetic marijuana.

County Health Authority Dr. Lynn Browne sent the five inmates to a local hospital, where four of them were treated and released that day, Haddix says. A fifth inmate was hospitalized overnight and returned to the jail Saturday, but no one was seriously injured.

Investigators are trying to determine how the synthetic marijuana was smuggled into the jail and are talking with as many as 30 inmates, Sheriff Maxey Cerliano says.

Cerliano adds that about a cigarette's worth of the substance was brought into the jail by a man arrested midday Friday by Longview police. Neither the police officer nor jail staff found the substance during searches, and once the suspect was inside the jail, it was shared with other inmates.

The suspect's name has not been released.
