Gilmer took care of business in the final game of the regular season, beating perfect Kilgore to wear the District 16-3A crown. The Buckeyes win their 11th championship in the last 12 seasons. Head coach Jeff Traylor hasn't lost a district game at Buckeye Stadium since his first year at Gilmer in 2000.
The win was hard fought. The Buckeyes came up huge in the last minute of the game with a goal-line stand to keep their lead and eventually take the W 20-14. After the victory, Coach Traylor said it was one of his all-time favorite wins. He gave props to his offense, defense and special teams but the D got the highest praise.
Gilmer faces Canton Thursday in the first round of postseason play. The Eagles finished the regular season 8-2 while the Buckeyes are 9-1. Kickoff from Tyler's Trinity Mother Frances Rose stadium is slated for 7 P.M.
Meanwhile, Kilgore and Athens will meet on Friday at Whitehouse with a kick of 7:30 P.M. The Hornets enter the match-up with and 4-6 overall record and 3-3 in district play.
