Gladewater airport board chairman says Carpenter's claims 'ridiculous'

Gladewater airport board chairman says Carpenter's claims 'ridiculous'

GLADEWATER (KYTX) - Alfred Lacy is chairman of the Gladewater Municipal Airport Board. Today, CBS 19 gave him a chance to explain his side of this ordeal.

Lacy says that Mark Carpenter leases a hangar at the airport, and he believes Carpenter is operating his personal oil and gas business at that hangar. That's something that Carpenter says is false. Lacy says, if his allegations are true, what is to stop him or anyone else from operating a non-aviation business at the airport and profiting personally from taxpayer funds.

Lacy says he believes the city violated its own law when it picked mark carpenter to serve on the airport board.

Each year, the FAA gives money to Texas for air transportation grants. Gladewater airport gets some of that money.

"You can't let one guy operate a private aviation business at the airport without, well, me going and getting a hangar and getting some foolish idea to go into a commercial operation. That's not right," Lacy says.

Carpenter tells CBS 19 that Lacy has a personal vendetta.

"That's ridiculous," Lacy responded. "He thinks that I don't like him because I ran an ad in the newspaper when he was running for election and I supported the other man. Now he thinks I don't like him. That has nothing to do with how I feel about him. I don't care. It doesn't matter. I don't dislike him. If he wants to look at it that way, he's paranoid. I can't help him."

The city council has hired an attorney to look into the matter. Meanwhile, this issue could blow up again Feb. 4th. That's when the airport board has its next meeting.
