Gladewater man attacked with ax handle, hospitalized

GLADEWATER (KYTX) - Investigators say a 43-year-old man was struck in the head with an ax handle at his home near Gladewater this weekend.

According to a probable cause affidavit, when Gregg County deputies responded to an assault call in the 1400 block of Old Highway 135 North at 1:37 a.m. Sunday, they found the victim with a five-inch cut on top of his head. A 45-year-old woman at the home said she and the victim were awoken by knocking at the front door, and when the victim checked the door, 22-year-old Jason Donald Keith kicked in the front door and hit the victim with a yellow plastic ax handle before leaving the home.

Keith is the ex-boyfriend of the victim's ex-wife, who lives at the home. The victim was treated and released at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.

Deputies found Keith hiding under the front porch of a home in the 200 block of Rosy Wade Road in Gregg County at 6:33 Sunday morning. After he was taken into custody, deputies found $699 in his jacket pocket, and after the victim reported $728 was taken from his wallet while the victim was at the hospital, deputies charged Keith with theft.

Keith is in the Gregg County Jail this afternoon on $25,000 bond, charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor theft.
