TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler's Glass Recreation Center is offering a unique opportunity to renew your fitness routine for the New Year and support the East Texas Food Bank at the same time.
Residents can check out the Glass Center for free from Tuesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 5, by donating two cans of food. Collection efforts support the center's Annual Food Drive, benefiting the East Texas Food Bank, a nonprofit dedicated to helping feed the hungry.
"This is just another way the City of Tyler wants to give back to our citizens and put them on a jump start to a healthier life style here in East Texas," said Glass Recreation Center Supervisor Ann Santana.
In East Texas, food bank officials estimate one in four children and one in five adults are considered at risk of hunger. The East Texas Food Bank distributed 18 million pounds of food last year, an amount that equaled about 15 million meals, according to the organization.
To keep up with demand, the Food Bank needs a constant supply of donations and monetary contributions, even after the holidays.
Residents who want to support those efforts can participate in the food drive and also return to healthier lifestyles after weeks of holiday merriment, Santana said.
Annual memberships to the Glass Recreation Center, 501 W. 32 St., are $15 for people ages 17 and above; $10 for youth. The center is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
