GOP Lt. Governor Candidates debate issues at community forum

TYLER (KYTX) - Three of the four republican candidates vying for the Lieutenant Governor seat in Texas took on a special forum and straw poll at the UT Tyler Ornealas Center Saturday afternoon.

Incumbent Lt. Governor David Dewhurst wasn't there for the debate, however, the three other candidates for the seat were: State Senator Dan Patrick, LAnd Commissioner Jerry Patterson, and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.

The debate got off to a lively start as the candidates challenged one another's stance and political history.

Moderators asked questions ranging from immigration reform, transportation funding, education and a whole lot more.

Following the debate audience members were asked to take part in a straw debate.

Commissioner Staples was named the winner with 68 votes compared to Senator Patrick's 45 votes. Commissioner Patterson received three votes and Dewhurst one vote.

The lieutenant control the senate and has leadership on the Texas budget. Candidates used this time to further drive home their stand on issues before the March 2014 primary election.
