Grass fire shuts down FM 2767, evacuates Smith County residents


SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - There are several smaller fires in the area near the large fire in Smith County.

People are using water hoses to fight those fires near their homes.

The Red Cross is now on the scene to help people who have been displaced by the fire evacuations.

People who live in the area say they smelled smoke first around noon.

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - The Smith County Sheriff's Office says you should avoid the area off of FM 2767 near Jackson Heights because of a large grass fire.

The road has been shut down and there is a mandatory evacuation for some homes in some neighborhoods in the area.

John Moore with the Sheriff's Office says eight fire departments are on the scene working to put out the fire.

The first call for a grass fire came in at 11:59 am, and the fire has grown since then.
