Head of Colorado Department of Corrections murdered, manhunt underway

EL PASO COUNTY, COLORADO (CNN) - A manhunt is on in Colorado after a shocking murder.

The head of the state's prison system was gunned down in his own home. Tom Clements was shot and killed Tuesday evening after answering his front door. So far, there are few leads in the murder.

Investigators say they are looking for the driver of a car seen in the area. They also want to talk to a woman who may have been walking in the neighborhood.

When asked about a possible motive, authorities say they are factoring Clements' job into their case.

"Because of the fact that Mr. Clements served in the position that he did as the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, we're sensitive to the fact that there could be any number of people who may have a motive for wanting to target him for a crime such as this," says Lt. Jeff Kramer El Paso County, Co. Sheriff's Office Spokesman.

Governor John Hickenlooper says, "Tom Clements dedicated his life to being a public servant, to making our state better, to making the world a better place and he is going to be deeply, deeply, missed."

Governor Hickenlooper appointed Tom Clements as Colorado's Prison Chief in January of 2011. Before that he was director of adult institutions for the Missouri Department of Corrections.
