Health Alert: Poultry markets likely source of flu

Health Alert

(CBS) - Scientists in China have confirmed for the first time that birds – specifically chickens at a poultry market – have transmitted the bird flu virus to humans. Researchers found all four of the patients tested had been exposed to infected poultry. An estimated 100 people in China have been infected with the virus since February and almost two dozen people have been killed. The scientists add that so far there has been no person to person transmission of the virus.

(CBS) - A protein known to play a role in the development of Parkinson's disease is able to enter and harm cells in the same way that viruses do. The study from Loyola University says the protein helps release enzymes that are toxic to the cell. Researchers say the finding could eventually lead to the development of new therapies to delay the onset of the disease or slow its progression.

(CBS) - A new study shows poor parenting – including overprotection – increases a child's risk of being bullied. Researchers analyzed 70 studies of more than 200-thousand children. They found negative parenting, including abuse and neglect, increases a child's chances of both being a bully and of being a victim. Researchers say parents who try to shield their children from all negative experiences may prevent their children from learning how to deal with bullies on their own, making them more vulnerable.
