Health Alert: Whole fruits lowers risk of type 2 diabetes

(CBS) - Eating more whole fruits including blueberries, grapes and apples can help lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health examined data on about 200,000 people.
Researchers found eating at least two servings a week of certain whole fruits reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by almost 25 percent compared to those who ate only one serving a month.

It wasn't the same for fruit juice. In fact, drinking one or more servings of fruit juice a day increased the risk of developing the disease by more than 20 percent.



(CBS) - Another study looking at patients with type 2 diabetes shows a simple urine test can help identify those at risk for cognitive decline.

The test picks up increased levels of a protein in the urine. Many people with type 2 diabetes excrete the protein after developing a kidney complication.

Researchers found patients who had the protein over four or five years had significant mental decline compared to those without it.



(CBS) - A new study finds poverty can cause people to suffer cognitive loss.

The findings show stresses from lack of money can lead to a cognitive decline that equals as many as 10 IQ points. The Harvard Economist who conducted the study stresses that poor people are not less intelligent,  but that they are occupied with so many concerns that they don't have time to think much about other matters.
