TYLER - A local Tyler hospital received a 5-star performance rating for multiple categories of surgical care, according to a leading online resource evaluation website.
Texas Spine & Joint Hospital achieved five stars for its performance in:
- Total Knee Replacement
- Total Hip Replacement
- Back Surgery
- Spinal Fusion Surgery Care
This achievement is part of new findings and data released Oct. 18 by Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions to find the right hospital for the right care.
According to the Healthgrades data, orthopedic and spine surgery patients treated at a 5-star facility are 51-67% less likely to experience common post-operative complications such as hospital acquired infection, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), joint dislocation, surgical implant malfunction and surgical site infection, depending on the procedure performed. Similarly, patients treated at a 1-star hospital are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience post-operative complications.
“The physicians and employees of Texas Spine & Joint Hospital dedicate significant time and resources towards achieving successful patient experiences and clinical outcomes. Improved patient outcomes are extremely important, not just during the immediate post-operative period, but, for the months and years that follow,” stated Tony Wahl, CEO. “We encourage patients to choose the hospital with the highest quality ratings for their condition. These 5-star ratings from Healthgrades confirm that, for orthopedic and spine care, the best choice for East Texans is Texas Spine & Joint Hospital,” Wahl added.

“Hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades five stars in knee and hip replacement, back surgery and spinal fusion have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care for their patients,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving a superior degree of quality for their patients is more important than ever.”
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures, as well as an evaluation of comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 18 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
