Helping feed the hungry in East Texas

TYLER (KYTX) - A new program through the Salvation Army could help feed a family of four for as little as $2 a day.

That's only 50 cents per person.

The program would help anyone who walks through the doors, into the cafeteria.

Feeding those in need, kids, parents, entire families, takes money.

And this program will allow people to plug directly into the community by sponsoring people who need a hot meal and a seat.

While volunteers and workers with the Salvation Army are busy filling plates, Willie Andrews waits in line to get a hot meal.

When he asked how often he eats at the Salvation Army, Andrews says, "every meal."

Andrews has been pulling up a seat, and sometimes staying at the Salvation Srmy in Tyler, for the past 6 years.

We asked what he would do without this option, Andrews said, "oh, I don't know. It's unimaginable."

All the food provided, from the fries, to the bread, is bought with the help of the community.

"I think sometimes really, people don't really know what a minimum amount can really do for people who are in need," says Chantel Millan with the Salvation Army.

Millan says the math is simple.

Feeding a child, a man or woman, is just 50 cents a day.

"For 50 cents a day you can feed one person, for a dollar a day you can feed two, for 2 dollars a day you can feed a family of 4. For a mom, a dad and their 2 kids, 2 bucks a day and you've given them a meal," says Millan.

The new national program lets people become monthly sponsors through donations, choosing exactly where they want their money to go down to the zip code.

The money helps with big events, and meals feeding about 5,000 East Texans each week.

"That's a big deal for people who maybe eat only once a day, maybe don't eat at all in a day. And to know that you can donate 2 bucks, and give them some nutrition, that's an amazing thing," says Millan.

An amazing thing for those who depend on it most.

"Food is so high out there, that three square meals it goes a long way," says Andrews.

The program is really easy, to get food on plates and at the tables just sign up at the Salvation Army's website.

The salvation Army hopes that with this new campaign they can get some people to make a New Year's resolution to help others.
