High expectations in today's job market

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - The unemployment numbers here in East Texas are dropping, but there are still quite a few people who are still looking for work. Here at the East Texas workforce solutions in Longview, workers here say there are some things people need to know as they look to find and keep that job going into 2013.

And some can't believe how long they've been looking.

"It's really hard finding work right now."

Brenda Upshaw has been out of work nearly 2 years.

"I think I'm ready to go back to banking now, that's my goal...to go back to what I know."

But, there's one little problem, she says the world of banking that she once knew, has become somewhat of a stranger...

"New regulations, it's so much different now, you can't help your customer like you could back 3 or 4 years ago."

And the experts say training is vital to catching the attention of potential employers. Brenda is taking classes technology classes at the east Texas workforce solutions.

"Need more training in electronical stuff."

Job Readiness Coach Sonia White says, along with skills training, employers are looking for good communication skills, and a strong understanding of social media.

"What they want to do is they want to come in and find out what these new trends are for job searching."

And employers look for specific words on your resume depending on the job you're applying for.

White says Workforce Solutions can help you include those.

"The majority of our East Texas employers require that you apply to them online."

Something John Bachanan says he is well aware of.

"When they look at it I'm there and If they're going to hire me they're going to hire me."

Sonia says it's all in the effort you put into your search.

She tells her classes everyday, ' when you're looking for a job, from 9 until 5, that is your job.

Today's employer is looking for that person that stands out from the group that can produce, that can deliver.
