How to avoid holiday food splurging

(KYTX) - In tonight's health alert... some bad news for me. One of my favorite things at Christmas is the egg nog.

But dieticians say when it comes to holiday splurging -- you should steer clear of foods loaded with cream, butter and gravy.

Instead they say eating a handful of nuts, or half of a banana before you go to a holiday party is a good way to avoid more tempting foods once you get there.

But if you do give in to temptation try not to try everything; instead just pick a few of your favorites.

"If you have many different tastes, and many different things on your plate, you're going to want more of it," said Robin Kaiden, registered dietician.

Another tip: don't pile on the extras. If you have to have that slice of homemade pie, don't add ice cream or other toppings. That's when the fat and calories really start to add up.
