TYLER (KYTX) - For the first time in about ten years, Trane in Tyler is opening up 100 new positions.
Seasonal layoffs and rehires have been extremely common in the last several years. For example, last year about 500 people were laid off, but last month, those 500 jobs were re-opened and filled again.
These current 100 open jobs are different though. These are new jobs for a brand new line, and people from all over East Texas are jumping at the bit to get them.
Family man Chris Smith has had to cut back a lot since the recession brought down the job market around 2008.
"It's definitely changed I mean things are tight, prices are high, everything is high!" Smith says.
He says things are finally starting to look up -- which is great news, since he has someone special depending on him.
"I have a 5-year-old daughter."
He has a job right now, but is looking to better his and his daughter's situation.
"I'm just looking for a pay upgrade, more hours," Smith says.
He's spent years hearing about closures for plants like Carrier and layoffs from companies like Trane.
That's why he was thrilled to hear that Trane's new product line would open up 100 brand new jobs. It's a great boost to the local economy, and a great opportunity for job seekers like him.
"I would love to apply for any positions that they have. Entry level, experience level, just anything that they have open," Smith says.
He immediately got his resume together and headed to Workforce Solutions in Tyler. He was one of 200 people who showed up to Trane's job fair, hosted by employment agency Remedy Intelligent Staffing.
"These are assembly positions, assembling the air conditioners as they come down the assembly line. They are temporary to hire. They're on Remedy's payroll for four months, and then they roll to Trane's pay roll after four months," says John Harper with Remedy.
Smith is crossing his fingers, hoping to be one of the lucky ones to nab one of the new positions.
"It would mean a lot, not just for me but just for my family."
These 100 new positions will be second shift jobs, from 4:30 in the afternoon to 1 a.m., Monday through Friday.
They're hoping to fill the positions by next week, when training classes start.
If you didn't make it out to the job fair Monday, you can still apply for these positions. Just drop by the Remedy Intelligent Staffing office at Copeland and Loop 323 in Tyler. That's on the 5th floor of the One American Center building.
