Interested in buying a tornado shelter?

HENDERSON (KYTX) -Have you ever thought about buying a tornado shelter? Shelter designers say your odds of survival in a tornado shelter are 98%.

Kelly Hall has been making tornado shelters for more than a decade in Henderson.

"People should have them now, because we are in the middle of tornado season," said Hall.

These FEMA approved underground shelters have undergone extreme testing.

Testers shoot 2x4's out of air cannons at the shelters to make sure they are sturdy and strong.

"Which is suppose to resemble 250 mile hour debris drop on the door," added Hall.

Kelly's wife, Beverly, says people from all across the country have purchased these tornado shelters that can seat anywhere from 6 to 15 people.

"Many people consider it just like an investment or insurance policy, you hope you don't use it, but if you need it, it's there for you," said Beverly Hall.

These shelters are nicknamed "the refuge" because they're protection in the time of storm.

The interior has steps with carpet, so you don't slip while you're walking down. Inside, you'll find bench seating and places to store emergency supplies.

The Halls say these shelters have saved lives and they say it will save yours, too.

"We have many stories of people who have told us they were down in their shelters when the storm went over. They came up and saw lots of devastation around them, but their family was safe," said Beverly Hall.

If you would like a tornado shelter for your family, it will cost you about $3,500 to $6,000, including installation. Some counties will offer a rebate if you have a tornado shelter. You need to contact the emergency management office in the county to see if they will do that for you.
