Isolated looters exploit Canton tornado disaster

"We've got enough hurdles to climb without people taking advantage of our property."

Van Zandt County officials are extending a curfew that went into effect after the area was devastated by a series of tornadoes April 29, 2017, according to a post on the Van Zandt County Tornado 2017 Facebook page.

The order is from dusk on May 6, 2017 to dawn May 9, 2017.

It comes after authorities said the county has seen isolated incidents of looting.

Gregg Sherlock and his wife Ivonna did not even have a chance to gather what little was left of their wrecked home before volunteers reported seeing people stealing from the debris.

The Sherlocks said being kicked while they were down was heartbreaking.

“A lot of us don’t have storage to save what we could salvage and we have to leave it out in the open,” he said. “The county issuing that curfew really is huge help.”

Family members have set up a GoFundMe account to help the Sherlocks recover.
