J.K. Rowling writes letter as Dumbledore to Houston girl after her family was killed

AUSTIN (KVUE)-- The sole survivor of a shooting that left her immediate family dead received a special letter in purple ink from J.K. Rowling after the 15-year-old quoted Albus Dumbledore at her family's memorial service last month.

"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light," Cassidy Stay read aloud at her family's memorial service three days after her family was shot and killed.

On July 9 Ronald Lee Haskell, 33, came to the Stay's home in search for his ex-wife, Cassidy's aunt. Haskell shot and killed Cassidy's father, mother and four siblings after Cassidy's parents refused to tell him where his ex-wife was. Cassidy was shot in the head, but she survived the shooting by playing dead. She immediately called the police to tell them what her uncle had done, and she warned the police that her uncle was headed to her grandparent's home.

Cassidy is credited with saving the lives of countless of people, and she has shown considerable strength and courage.

A Facebook page called 'We want J.K. Rowling to meet Cassidy Stay' was created following her speech at the service.

The meeting between the two hasn't happened yet, but the Facebook page announced Monday that Cassidy was given a letter, a wand and an acceptance letter to Hogwarts from the acclaimed author.

"This afternoon, I talked to a friend of Cassidy's who confirmed that J.K. Rowling did, in fact, write her a personalized letter from 'Dumbledore' (hand-written with purple ink). She was also sent a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts with a school supply list, along with the third book with J.K.'s autograph. I'm so excited and ecstatic that we were all able to make a difference! How wonderful. However, I still really want J.K. Rowling to actually meet her. We might just have to keep this page going until that actually happens," the page wrote.

The Houston-area community continues to support Cassidy. On Sunday the Bareback Bar and Icehouse in Spring, Texas held a benefit for Cassidy, where a Harry Potter themed cake was donated just for her.
