Job growth strong in October, unemployment still up

(CNN) - Job growth unexpectedly surged in October, despite the 16-day partial government shutdown.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the economy added 204,000 jobs last month. Economists were expecting weak job growth, due to uncertainties created by the budget battles in Washington. The jobs report also showed the unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.3%, up from 7.2% in September, but economists expect this to be a passing blip.

Still the picture isn't completely rosy. More than 11 million Americans remained unemployed in October. And four million of them have been out of work for at least six months.
