The Kaufman County District Attorney's office announced the appointment of an interim district attorney Tuesday.
First Assistant District Attorney Brandi Fernandez will lead the office for the next 21 days as allowed under the Texas Government Code. Her time as district attorney could be shortened if Governor Rick Perry makes a permanent appointment before the 21-day time period expires.
"During this time frame, he office will continue moving forward to serve the community while working through these tragic events which have affected the lives and families of this office," the district attorney's office said in a statement. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Mike and Cynthia McLelland. They will be deeply missed."
McLelland and his wife were shot and killed inside their home near Forney Saturday after someone kicked in their front door.
No suspects have been named in the case.
