Keeping your password safe and securing your identity

TYLER (KYTX) - The futuristic world where voice recognition software gives you access to your accounts hasn't gotten here yet, so we're stuck with having passwords, and most likely a lot of them.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey found out there are ways to come up with secure passwords to safeguard your accounts and identity.

UT Tyler Biology students Gregg Warren and Isaac Himby have a lot of passwords.

"I probably have ten or twelve," said Himby.

"I have plenty I have separate e-mails, officials emails, I got em here at the school, facebook twitter all kinds of crazy things," said Warren.

It's not uncommon to have a hard time remembering all of them, so people often use the same password  or very simple ones.

"Mix and match and make it more difficult for the bad guys," said Dr. Nary Subramanian who is a computer science professor at UT Tyler that specialized in computer security.

He said a popular way to create intricate passwords that are hard to crack but easy to remember is to use pass phrases instead of passwords.

With a passphrase you'll pick a favorite quote or song lyric and use the first letter in them and to take a step further substitute letters with symbols.

Subramanian said it may take a little work to memorize your password, but that's better than saving them on your computer.

"If you save passwords on your hard disk people can actually go in and retrieve the password," said Subramanian.

He said pro hackers can crack codes in a matter of three seconds while some special computer programs can crack the code in about 10 seconds.

"Capital letters lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, even small changes will make it very difficult to find a password."

Another safety measure you can take to keep your password secure is to change it every 30 days. You can do that by adding a capital letter, symbol or number.
