Kilgore considering overlay districts to enhance entryway landscaping

KILGORE (KYTX) - The self-professed City of Stars wants drivers to have a good first impression when entering Kilgore.

Planning and Zoning Director Carol Windham says the City of Kilgore Planning and Zoning Commission will consider creating an entryway corridor overlay ordinance for roads leading into town, including U.S. 259, state highways 31, 42, and 135, and Industrial Boulevard on the city's southwest side.

"This entryway corridor overlay, the main goal is aesthetics of our entryways into our city, to beautify them," Windham says. "That's our main focus for this overlay."

If approved, properties within the overlay district will have additional regulations to beautify their properties, including screening of dumpsters and outdoor storage, and other landscaping. There could also be an opportunity for businesses to receive landscaping grants.

Commissioners will meet at 8:30 Wednesday morning at City Hall, 815 N. Kilgore Street.

Windham says the City of Kilgore is also working with the Texas Department of Transportation to add entryway signage along state highways. Those signs could be up within the next 12 months.
