LISD hands out yearly honors to elementary, secondary teachers

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Teachers from Ware Elementary and Forest Park Middle schools have been selected as Longview ISD's 2014-15 elementary and secondary Teacher of the Year, respectively.

A committee chose Shameika Allen and Megan Burns from among other campus picks. The pair will represent the district for the next year. They will also be considered for Region 7 Teacher of the Year in June.

Campus Teachers of the Year are chosen during the latter part of each school year by their principals and peers. A panel of former honorees then selects district elementary and secondary winners based on essay submissions. For 2014-15, campus winners were asked to write a brief essay about how their students would grade their efforts.

"Not only do we set individual expectations, but as a class we set family expectations," Allen wrote. "My students know that I'm going to do everything within my power to help them master the tools (skills) they need to meet our goals as elementary fifth graders."

Allen has been a teacher for eight years, with seven of them at Longview ISD. Burns is relatively new to the teaching profession, having taught for three years – two of them in the district.

"I try my best to foster a positive relationship with my students- professional, yet personal," Burns wrote. "Years from now, the children may not remember how to solve for a variable, but they will remember how I made them feel."

Allen, Burns and other campus Teachers of the Year will be honored by the district's Board of Trustees in the fall.
