Local and State races decided early after low turnout

(KYTX) - The primary runoff election has been victim to low voter turnout, and two local races were decided within hours of the polls closing at 7 p.m.

In Smith County, Jason Ellis led decisively, ultimately winning the County Court at Law Judge contest over Mike Patterson, 62 to 38 percent.

Ellis does not face a democrat in November.

In Gregg County, the only race with a runoff was for the Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 office. Democrat James Harold Mathis defeated Phillip Burns, 53 to 47 percent. No republicans ran for the office.

Statewide, three term incumbent Lt. Governor David Dewhurst was defeated in Tuesday's runoff for the GOP nomination by Houston Sen. Dan Patrick.
