1 arrested for theft after high-speed chase through Smith, Van Zandt counties

The suspect allegedly stole $100 from an open cash register drawer.

A $100 theft at local convenience store prompted a high-speed chase through two counties and ended with one person in custody.

Authorities responded to a theft call at a local convenience store around 9 a.m. Thursday morning after a suspect allegedly stole $100 from an open cash register before fleeing in a vehicle.

The suspect was located on I-20 west and a high-speed chase ensued between Smith and Van Zandt counties until authorities deployed spike stripes, stopping the vehicle.

A witness captured cell phone video of the chase, and estimated they were going 80-100 mph.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, is now in custody and will be transported to the Smith County Jail.
