Business owner raises awareness for growing homeless population

Clint Benefield is sitting outside his Tyler business until he raises $3000 for homeless people around East Texas.

Clint Benefield, owner of Vapor Galleria in Tyler, is doing what he can to raise awareness for the homeless population around East Texas.

Theres people that really have more problems than you, Benefield said.

Sitting in a folding chair on top of 15-foot scaffolding outside his store, he said that he plans on staying there until he raises $3000 for the United Way.

According to Christina Fulsom with the East Texas Human Needs Network, the number of homeless people in the Tyler area is rising.

We believe that the homeless population was pretty stable but over the past couple of years it has been ticking up, Fulsom said.

Reasons why she said that she encourages all East Texans to volunteer.

The Salvation Army, PATH, the East Texas Crisis Center, all of those are organizations that have good programs, Fulsom said.
