First Baptist Church opens rec center for Tyler YMCA members through end of year

Church Rec Center for YMCA

TYLER - After the Tyler YMCA shut its doors permanently, one church opened theirs for those members to utilize. The First Baptist Church in Tyler is opening their recreational facility through December, at no additional cost for those individuals.

"I'm in charge of a facility that does the same thing that they do," said Shawn Moore, director of recreation at First Baptist Recreational Center.

After 64 years of operation, the Tyler YMCA closed on Sept. 24. The decision to close came after several financial setbacks for the organization.

Member of the YMCA who paid for memberships, recreational sports and childcare were not issued a refund, and they may never be according to Tyler YMCA CEO Jeremy Bumgardner.

He said there are many individuals that have prepaid for sports programs or memberships, and at this time he can't guarantee a refund for anyone.

"Our main goal is to be here for our community," Moore said. "Right now, the need is to help the Y's members continue the lifestyle they had, and that is to continue working on their fitness."

There will be a $4 charge for a key card to get into the facility.

"It's easy to just stop working out," Moore said. "Hopefully with this option to come and use First Baptist Gym, they can without any hiccups in what they've been working towards."

The Tyler First Baptist Church does not have child care services, which is something many parents used the YMCA for. That service ends permanently on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4:00 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club in Tyler offers similar pricing for childcare. It costs $45 per child per week, which is the same as the non-member YMCA price.

Those with memberships looking for other recreational facilities are also able to use the Palestine and Corsicana YMCA's until their membership expires.

The hours for First Baptist Church's recreation center are as follows:
Monday/Tuesday/Thursday: 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Wednesday/Friday: 6:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Sunday: closed
