Drivers face increased risk of deer-related crashes

The number of auto accident claims stemming from deer crossings is the highest during the month of November.

It's around this time of year that Gregg County Game Warden Todd Long says he responds to the most deer crossing calls.

"They are getting more and more populated in these more developed areas," Long said.

According to data collected by State Farm, nearly 18% of deer-related accidents in Texas happen in November.

Reasons why he says to keep an eye out for deer, especially at dawn and dusk.

Typically we see them in cold weather and at nights," Long said.

He also said that if you hit a deer, call the game warden and do not pick it up and move it from the scene.

"It is against the law to be in possession of a deer or any part of a deer that was killed on a public roadway," Long said.
