East Texans cherish their fathers on Father's Day

Father's Day

LONGVIEW - Father's Day has been celebrated since December 1907. The holiday was created for the Monograph Mining Disaster.

The disaster took the lives of 361 men and left around 1,000 kids fatherless. Father's Day was created to honor those fathers who lost their lives.

Many East Texans recognized their fathers during the holiday.

"I wouldn't trade anything for my father." Eleven year old Joseph Allen said. "My dad helps coach my football team and cares for me."

Allen's father John, says being a father is his greatest accomplishment. He encourages new fathers to spend as much time as they can with their kids.

Father's Day can also be used to recognize men who have impacted other lives. Teachers, counselors, coaches, and other mentors serve as father figures for children.
