East Texas State Fair presents calf birthing center

TYLER - Part of the East Texas State Fair’s mission is to promote agriculture and provide educational opportunities. This year the fair is presenting The Miracle of Life Birthing Center.

Up to 10 calves will be born during the 10 days of the fair. Fair guests will have the opportunity to learn about agriculture production, veterinary science and animal husbandry.

Ten cows will be provided by Richie's Dairy in Rusk and have been bred to calve during the dates of the fair.

The cattle are a combination of two of the most common dairy cattle breeds, Jersey and Holstein. However, they are both the same type of cattle in that they are used to produce dairy products, rather than beef cattle which are produced to supply meat.

The cattle provided for the birthing center will be under 24-hour care by trained professionals who travel the country operating birthing centers at similar fairs and festivals.

The Birthing Center serves as a gateway to the livestock, dairy, and other agricultural events taking place at the East Texas State Fair. Mother Nature dictates all, but you may get lucky enough to witness the miracle of life. If not, you will still get a chance to see these newest animals during the fair's 10-day run.
