NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) - A Nacogdoches woman has been "vlogging" and "blogging" about her weight loss journey for years. Dr. Nina Ellis-Hervey's story caught the eye of People Magazine and that landed her in the August 27th issue.
Many people put on the Freshman 15, but Dr. Nina Ellis-Hervey says for her, it was more like the Freshman 50.
That weight gain continued into college. She ballooned up to 235 pounds on a diet of junk food and no exercise. Finally in 2005, she decided her yo-yo dieting had to stop.
"I definitely developed low self esteem," says Dr. Nina Ellis-Hervey.
That was Nina Ellis-Hervey's secret in college. To everyone else, the outgoing, involved, smart college student was comfortable with her weight, but she wasn't.
"I was always a pretty girl as far as my face was concerned. I could hide behind that," says Ellis-Hervey.
As under-grad ended, Nina decided it was time to stop hiding and start living a healthier, more active life.
"At that time, I decided that being a psychologist, you know you really have to be able to help others with their issues," says Hervey. "And if you are hiding behind your own issues, how can you help other people?"
While folks are reading People Magazine to see how Dr. Nina lost weight, she started with Weight Loss for Dummies. "I started studying those and figuring out foods I could eat and could live with and instead of thinking of it as a diet, I wanted to think about things I could do for the rest of my life."
Her program was pretty simply. She started working out six to seven days a week for an hour or more. "Lifting weights, running, sometimes the elliptical, the stair climber, I really really say running again, because I really got into running. It was a really good way for me to release stress and tension."
3 years ago, Dr. Nina started video blogging on YouTube about her weight loss journey to inspire others also dealing with low-self esteem, like she did. That's just what People Magazine needed for their story-- How We Lost 100 Pounds.
"It gave me more exposure as far as the story goes, and I think more people found out through my weight loss, it wasn't just about weight loss it was about correcting your mind and correcting your thoughts."
Nina says she's kept the weight off because she thinks of it as a journey and a life long experience.
The 100 pounds didn't fall off over night, it was a slow 8 to 12 month process, but Nina has kept it off for almost 7 years now.
