KILGORE - The Kilgore College Rangerettes have a long legacy in East Texas and around the country. All week, 89 ladies work to perfect their high kicks in hopes of being one of the select chosen few to wear the coveted red, white and blue.
Hopeful Veronica Sundin is trying out for the Rangerettes a second time, and she's been practicing.
"We would have a kick class with a current Rangerette once a week, and on the side, we would work on our solos," she said. "I have to try again. Like, I can't let this be it."
Director Dana Blair said the Rangerettes is where dance drill teams started. They were the first drill team to ever perform on a football field.
The dance team is not just a hometown favorite. They perform all over the world and at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
After coaching the Rangerettes for 32 years, she says the kinship built is what keeps her coming back day after day.
"They are definitely a family, and being a Rangerette, you get to be a Rangerette forever," she said.
She's passed the legacy on to her daughter, who's coming back for her second year.
"Out of the very corner of my eye, I see everything she does that she's not supposed to. Just because I have a special radar," she said.
Alexa Blair said college can be tough, and the Rangerettes have helped her overcome difficult times.
"I don't have siblings, so it was cool to have 36 to 72 girls to look up to every year," Blair said.
The Rangerettes are chosen by Director Blair and outside judges. The 89 hopefuls spend the week learning high kick routines, jazz and baton routines. Coach Blair said she looks for adaptability and dance ability.
Sundin said she's spent a year building her confidence in hopes of earning a spot, and she's ready for a second round.
"Having to come back and try out and put myself out there as a Rangerettes candidate, I feel like that takes a lot of courage," Sundin said. "I feel like that just shows how much I want it. "
Tryouts are on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. The new Rangerettes will be announced on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in a secret ceremony in Dodson auditorium.
