LONGVIEW - People lined up along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to watch the mile-long Juneteenth parade.
Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. Also, the freedom of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South.
Attendees were treated to dance teams, custom cars, and floats that threw out candy to kids.
A softball tournament was also held at the Broughton Recreation Center. Teams from across East Texas competed.
Young people at the event say they're proud to celebrate Juneteenth.
“This is important for our elders who fought for our freedom.” William Colbert said.
The Girls and Boys Club of Gregg County used the event to fundraise a college tour to Atlanta to see Historically Black Colleges.
