UPDATE: Police ID suspect in Longview police chase, student injury

Longview police have identified the man who led them on a car chase, injuring a Longview ISD student.

LPD said they responded to reports of a disturbance at 2100 W. Marshall Ave involving 46-year-old Kenneth Mestas of Pueblo, Colorado. When the officer attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle and the passenger involved in the disturbance, the driver sped off from the officer. Officers say the passenger appeared to be in distress.

Police said the suspect then led police on a 21-minute chase reaching speeds of 100 MPH. Officers tried several times to deploy spikes to stop the suspect but he drove around them. The suspect was traveling south on Airline Road approaching Hawkins when traffic became congested so police say he drove off the roadway. He went down a hill and collided with a driveway, causing the first crash. He then collided with another car on Airline Rd.

Longview ISD confirms the driver of this car was one of their students. Police said the student was transported to Good Shepherd North Park with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and then to Gregg County Jail.

Mestas was charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful restraint and assault family violence bodily injury.

No bond has been posted at this time.
