According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, a deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle around 12:35 a.m. in the 8400 block of CR 35. The deputy stopped the vehicle as they were driving on the wrong side of the road.

A short time later, the driver exited the vehicle and was told by the officer that he was being detained. The suspect hit the officer and then attempted to run. A taser was used two times and on both occasions the suspect pulled the taser barbs out and threw them down.

The deputy then pursued the man, as he attempted to run a second time.

Sheriff's officials say that's when the suspect turned and charged the deputy, taking them to the ground and attempted to take the deputy's firearm.

The deputy was able to draw their firearm and shot the suspect two times. The man was later transported to a local hospital and is in surgery.

Officials from the Tyler Police Department and Sheriff's Deputies arrived shortly after. The Texas Rangers have also been brought in to investigate the incident.

The deputy on duty has been placed on administrative leave.

Sheriff's officials have not released the identify of the suspect, but say he is a white male in his mid fifties.

Officials also believe the suspect was in possession of methamphetamine at the time of the incident.
