New body armor arrives for Smith County Deputies

Smith County Sheriff's Deputies received new body armor Friday after months of collecting donations.

New body armor arrived for Smith County Sheriff’s Deputies on Friday after months of collecting donations.

Former Texas District 1 Senator Kevin Eltife started collecting donations after the Dallas shooting that killed 5 police officers last July.

One of the donors, Cavender’s Boot City co-owner Clay Cavender, said that making a donation was a no-brainer.

“Their safety equipment is as important as our public safety,” Cavender said.

According to Deputy Justin Stockwell, the new high-velocity bullet proof vests are a definite upgrade.

“It’s great. We are fortunate to live in a pro-law enforcement community,” Stockwell said.
