HURST, TEXAS - This week's CBS 19 Children are a Gift features a young boy who wants a family that's compassionate about the things he's been through in life.
Devante, 12, is very intelligent and the only one of his four siblings not adopted yet.
“I want a family that I can call my own," he said.
Devante is intelligent, athletic and respectful of others. He possesses a rare quality for a child his age. He actually listens when people talk.
“Because I can hear what they're actually saying, and they don't have to repeat themselves and it shows manners," he noted.
Devante has been in foster care since he was 5 years old. He lived in a home with drugs, abandonment and neglect.
“It was hard but I know some kids that have harder lives than me and that just means I need to help them out," he said.
Devante has a tender heart, the kind he hopes for in a forever family.
“Caring, has a really good heart, believes in God," he said about the qualities he hopes they possess.
Devante has three younger siblings, who are currently getting adopted. It's important he always remains in contact with them.
When asked what makes him smile, Devonte didn’t hesitate.
“Thinking about my siblings," he said.
Understanding the older he gets the harder his chances are, Devante yearns to be adopted. But he believes in miracles.
"There are miracles even in the slightest ways," he said. "There's always going to be someone there for you and care for you even if you don't really know that person, but they'll be there for you."
Wise beyond his years, Devante needs a compassionate forever family who will be patient when he questions the world around him.
He needs parents who will realize right off the bat how lucky they are to call Devante "son" and that Children are a Gift.
