Children Are A Gift: Shakyra, Brianna, Gaige, Calliegh, Johney

TYLER (KYTX) – KYTX CBS 19 continues our commitment to finding foster children loving homes. It was three years ago when we began our weekly series called "Children are a Gift." Since then, many local children have been adopted. Here's an update on five more we featured.

It was January 2012 when we introduced you to Shakyra decorating a cake at Tyler's Chez Bazan. She told us about her personality.

"I can be funny and kind of crazy at the same time. I'm just a nice person," she said.

This 11-year-old had spent 7 years in foster care. Despite the long wait, she remained positive. "I think I would bring a family happiness." Shakyra is now sharing that happiness with her forever family.

In November 2011 you met three adorable siblings; Brianna, Gaige and Calliegh. They were ages five, three and two. They were happy, healthy children in need of a loving home.

"They are still grieving the loss of their birth family. In a lot of ways they still don't understand what has happened," Cindy Hodges with Child Protective Services told us.

It would take some time for these young children to trust a new family. Hodges said, "They need parents with a lot of patience and a lot of love."

These affectionate children now have that unconditional love after finding their forever family, and being given the gift of growing up together.

It was January 2012 when we brought you the story of 7-year-old Johney. "He's very energetic. He's a happy child, very loving and polite and well-mannered," his caseworker, Emily Lipe, told us.

After two years in foster care, Johney was excited about finding his forever family. "He wants to know how long before we find him one. He asks that quite a bit," said Lipe.

He will never have to ask that question again, now that Johney has been adopted. Lipe said, "He'll bring a family joy, love and happiness."

In all, five more East Texas children given a chance at a bright future to reach their dreams. It's a loving reminder to their new families that "Children are a Gift"
