Staying safe over the holiday weekend

CBS 19 heads out to Lake Tyler for holiday plans and how to stay safe

TYLER - The unofficial official end of summer is here. Labor Day weekend is upon us and that means many East Texans will be firing up the grill and enjoying some extra free time with friends and family.

CBS 19 went out to Lake Tyler to get a feel for how people are celebrating the holiday and also what you should know before making plans tomorrow.

Hunter Clark and Caleb Holmes were out at the lake this afternoon taking in some sun and looking forward to the extra time off.

“Drink a little bit,” Clark said. “Maybe grill. Get a burger. That's the plan.?

They’ve vowed to do so responsibly, saying that they have arranged rides to get home, but wish another option was available in the area.

“We need to get some Uber everywhere,” Clark said.

Over the holiday weekend, law enforcement will be enforcing their "no refusal" policy, meaning anyone who is pulled over suspected of drunk driving will be forced to submit a blood test.

Enjoying Labor Day responsibly also means keeping you and your family safe while out on the water. That's why Kelly Orodnick and her family say they always have life vests on board.

“Yes sir this is our boat, we are just taking it out to have a BBQ, hang out with some friends and enjoy the weekend,” Orodnick said.

Mosquito spray is extremely important this time of the year especially with the heightened awareness towards West Nile and Zika.

If you don’t have plans and are trying to find something a little different the Jacksonville Labor Day Ride is happening tomorrow.
