Suspect in hospital after officer involved shooting in Smith Co.

SMITH CO. - An unidentified suspect is in the hospital today after being shot during a traffic stop in the 8400 block of CR 35 where he resisted arrest by attempting to take a deputy's firearm.

The suspect was driving on the wrong side of the road when a Smith County Sheriff's Patrol Deputy stopped him.

After exiting the vehicle, the suspect was told by the deputy that he was being detained. The suspect then turned, swung, and hit the officer.

Immediately after hitting the officer, the suspect then tried to run and the deputy used his taser twice to stop him.

Both times the taser was used, the suspect pulled the taser barbs out and threw them on the ground.

The suspect then tried to take the deputy's firearm.

The deputy was able to shift his position away from the suspect to draw their firearm, firing two shots.

Both shots struck the suspect.

A short time later, more officers arrived and the suspect was transported to a local hospital.
