TDA computer compromised, East Texas school districts impacted

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), an employee's state-issued laptop was compromised by a malicious ransomware attack on Oct. 26 2017.

As a result of that attack, students in several school districts in Texas may have been affected.

Information on the laptop included names, social security numbers, home addresses, birthdates and personal phone numbers of several students and their families.

So far, TDA's Information Security Officer (ISO) has found that over 700 students whose sensitive personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, exposed to acquisition by an unauthorized individual.

The TDA would like to note that, to date, no evidence has been discovered to suggest the compromised information on the laptop has been misused.

It is recommended that the affected students or, if minors, their parents, should contact the three major credit bureaus and activate a fraud alert on their behalf.
